Workshop “Perspectives of Dis/ability History in an Interdisciplinary and International Context”, hosted by Prof. Dr. Uta Halle, Prof. Dr. Cordula Nolte, PD. Dr. Sonja Kerth (University of Bremen)
6th – 7th February 2016 (Delmenhorst, Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg)

Workshop “Images of Dis/ability”. Disease, Disability & Medicine in Medieval Europe. 9th Annual Meeting, co-hosted by the Creative Unit Homo debilis and the University of Nottingham. 4th-6th December 2015 (Bremen, Gästehaus Teerhof)

Organisers: Prof. Dr. Cordula Nolte and Dr. Bianca Frohne

This year’s meeting explores images and representations of dis/ability in all kinds of media – pictures, texts, objects – and genres. Combining the perspectives of various historical approaches, it is particularly dedicated to the history of arts. In terms of dis/ability history this discipline offers a broad field of work which still requires systematic research.

The meeting will be organized as a workshop centering on discussions instead of on paper-based lectures. Contributors are asked to inspire these open talks by sending in exemplary materials such as one or two pictures, short texts resp. passages of texts etc.

2014 Conference on Disease, Disability and Medicine in Medieval Europe: Infection and Long-Term Sickness, co-hosted by the University of Nottingham and the Creative Unit Homo debilis. 6th/7th December 2014 (University of Nottingham)

Infectious disease is common in medieval Europe, but the long-term effects of diseases such as tuberculosis, meningitis, measles or leprosy do not often feature in discussions of disability or medieval health. We invite 20 minute papers on all aspects of infectious disease from medieval contexts. These may include discussions of data, burial ritual, inclusion and exclusion, economic impacts, the mental health of those who were affected, legal considerations or any care that was given to the affected.

Further information

The conference will be preceded by a Graduate Workshop on medieval disability, free for all postgraduate students with an interest in disability studies. Registration and any queries about the workshop can be sent to Dr Christina Lee: Christina.Lee@nottingham.ac.uk
Registration deadline: 1 Dec 2014
